Capital letters typing test

Common words with plenty of capital letters, to build a clean, fast Shift-key habit.

The Shift key, done right

Touch typists hold Shift with the little finger of the hand that is not typing the letter: right Shift for letters typed by the left hand, left Shift for letters typed by the right hand. Press Shift first, tap the letter, then release Shift before the next key. Releasing too late produces two capitals in a row, one of the most common errors in this test.

Check your result

After the test, look at "Accuracy by type of character". If capital letters are several points below lowercase letters, the coach will suggest a targeted drill. The Capitals and punctuation lessons teach the movement step by step.

How the score is calculated

A "word" is five characters, spaces and punctuation included. Net WPM is your gross speed minus one word per minute for every error you leave uncorrected, and accuracy is the share of all your keystrokes that were right, including mistakes you fixed. The timer starts on your first key. Read the full formulas.

Questions

Should I use Caps Lock for capitals?

Only for long runs of capitals. For a single capital at the start of a word, Shift is faster and less error-prone.

Which Shift key should I use?

The one on the opposite side from the letter. It keeps both hands near the home row.
