Code typing test

Short, original code snippets. Brackets, quotes, operators and line breaks, with indentation filled in for you.

  • Esc new text
  • Timer starts on your first key
  • Switching tabs pauses the test

Why practise typing code?

Code is full of characters that ordinary text rarely uses: braces, brackets, semicolons, equals signs and quotes. Typing them without looking saves small amounts of attention all day. Press Enter at the end of each line; the indentation of the next line is filled in automatically, as in most code editors, and is not counted in your speed.

How the score is calculated

TypingSpark counts a "word" as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. That is the convention used by typing tests and employers, and it makes results comparable however long the actual words are.

  • Gross WPM is every character in your final text divided by five, per minute.
  • Net WPM takes gross WPM and subtracts one word per minute for each error you left uncorrected. This is the number most employers ask for.
  • Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct, including mistakes you later fixed.

The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, and pauses if you switch tabs. Read the full formulas.

Which languages are included?

JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS, JSON and shell commands. Every snippet was written for TypingSpark.

Why is my code speed lower than my text speed?

Symbols sit at the edges of the keyboard and usually need Shift. A code speed well below your text speed is normal.
