Typing speed calculator
Enter what was typed, how long it took and the errors left in it. The calculator uses the same formulas as every TypingSpark test.

Count the characters in a text
0 characters, 0 words of 5 characters
The formulas
A typing "word" is five characters, including spaces and punctuation.
- Gross WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes)
- CPM = correct characters ÷ minutes
- Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100
- KPH = keystrokes ÷ hours
If you only know the word count, enter words and the calculator multiplies by five. If you leave keystrokes empty, it assumes the keystrokes equal the characters typed.
Worked example
In 2 minutes you type 520 characters and leave 4 errors. Gross WPM is 520 ÷ 5 ÷ 2 = 52. Net WPM is 52 − 4 ÷ 2 = 50. CPM is (520 − 4) ÷ 2 = 258.
Questions
Why divide by five?
Average English words are about five characters including the space after them. Using a fixed length makes results comparable regardless of which words were typed.
