How to stop looking at the keyboard
Looking down is the biggest single brake on typing speed. Here is how to break the habit for good.
Every glance at the keyboard costs time twice: once to look down and find the key, and again to find your place in the text. It also breaks your rhythm. Most people who look down can already find many keys by feel; what is missing is trust and a reliable way back to the right position.
1. Learn to find the home row without looking
Feel for the small bumps on the F and J keys. Your index fingers rest there, and the other fingers fall naturally on A S D and K L ;. Practise putting your hands on the home row with your eyes closed until it takes less than a second. This is your anchor: every reach starts and ends here.
2. Look at the screen, not your hands
If you need to know where a key is, look at the on-screen keyboard instead of the real one. Turn it on in the Settings of any test or lesson, together with the finger guide, which shows which finger to use for the next key. Your eyes stay up, and your hands learn the positions.
3. Slow down on purpose
You will type more slowly for a week or two. That is the price of the habit change, and it is temporary. Choose a speed at which you can type without looking and with 95% accuracy, even if it feels painfully slow. Speed returns faster than you expect.
4. Make looking down inconvenient
- Cover your hands with a light cloth or a sheet of paper for a few sessions.
- Turn on "Hide the page while typing" so only the text is visible.
- Use the Key Blitz game: a single key appears, and there is no time to look down.
5. Practise every row in order
The typing lessons introduce two keys at a time, starting from the home row, and use only keys you already know. After a few lessons you will know whole rows by feel. The 30-day plan puts it all into a schedule.
How long it takes
With 15 minutes a day, most people stop looking down for letters within two to three weeks. Numbers and symbols take a little longer. Keep going: the habit, once formed, lasts for life.
