Why employers use more than one task

A single typing test shows how fast you copy text. Office jobs ask for more: entering records without mistakes, working in a spreadsheet, making the changes a manager asks for and typing from a recording. Employers and staffing agencies therefore often combine several short tasks into one assessment. Practising the same mix means nothing on the day is new to you.

How each part is scored

Every part uses the same formulas as the rest of TypingSpark. Copy typing counts keystrokes (net WPM and keystroke accuracy). Data entry, spreadsheet and editing tasks compare your finished answer with the expected one by edit distance, and transcription uses word accuracy. Each part has its own pass mark, and its score out of 100 gives half the points for speed and half for accuracy. The full scoring rules include a worked example.

Getting a result you can show

At the end you can create a signed result code with your overall score, your copy typing speed and your average accuracy. Anyone can check it on the verify page. It is a practice record, not a certificate of employment testing: an employer will still run their own test, often supervised.

Practising one task at a time

If one part pulls your score down, practise it on its own: the spreadsheet test, the document editing test, audio transcription practice, the data entry simulator or the 10-key test.

Questions

How long does an assessment take?

Between about 12 and 15 minutes, depending on the job. Each part shows its time limit before you start it, and you can take a break between parts.

Are these the real tests employers use?

No. They are original practice tasks modelled on the kinds of tasks employers combine. Pass marks are typical figures from job postings; your employer may use different ones.

Can I skip a part?

Yes. A skipped part scores 0 and counts as not passed, so the overall result shows what is left to practise.

Is anything saved on your servers?

No. Results are saved in your browser like every other TypingSpark result. A result code is only created if you ask for one, and it carries its own data.
